However, because these appliances contain mechanical parts and sharp impellers, you must prioritize safety above everything else when attempting to fix them.

Here is a safe, step-by-step guide to clearing a jam in your garbage disposal without risking an injury or damaging the motor.

Turn Off the Power to the Unit Completely
Never put your hands or any tools near the disposal while it is connected to power. Flip the switch on the wall to the ‘Off’ position, and then go underneath the sink and unplug the unit directly from the electrical outlet. For extra safety, you can turn off the breaker for the kitchen circuit.

Check for Visible Obstructions with a Flashlight
Shine a flashlight down into the drain to see what is causing the blockage. Common culprits include fibrous vegetables, bones, silverware, or accumulated grease. If you see a foreign object jammed inside, use long needle-nose pliers or tongs to lift it out. Never use your bare hands.

Manually Rotate the Blades from the Bottom
Most garbage disposals have a hexagonal hole located on the very bottom of the unit underneath the sink. Insert a standard 1/4-inch Allen wrench (hex key) into this hole and rotate it back and forth. This manually turns the motor shaft and easily breaks free any hard debris jammed between the blades.

Reset and Flush the Disposal
Once the shaft rotates freely, remove the wrench and plug the disposal back into the outlet. Press the red ‘Reset’ button located on the bottom of the unit. Turn on the cold water faucet to a high flow, and flip the wall switch to test the disposal. Let the water run for a minute to clear out all remaining debris.

A clogged garbage disposal can quickly cause water and food scraps to back up into your kitchen sink, creating unpleasant […]

[3

post-39","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-emergency-guides
["GET
